Dear 16-Year-Old Me
Dear 16-Year-Old me,
Right now everything feels like it’s hanging in the balance. Your life feels like an episode of Degrassi and there’s no escape from the suffocating drama in your personal and social life.
Your friends are changing, you’re changing and you feel like no one can possibly understand what you’re going through, least of all your parents. Life seems overwhelming and impossible to manage.
But guess what 16-year-old me. You ARE going to get through this. You’re going to live and learn and become a better person as you go through life’s trials and realize you have more blessings in your life than hardships.
Today in particular you are going to look back and realize:
Your parents simply loved you and those nights where you yelled and slammed the door you were probably overreacting.
That drama is overrated and now you and your friends are mature enough to realize that life goes on and gossip is the easiest way to damage people. You know now that losing touch doesn’t mean you’ve lost a friend forever. Sometimes it means your lives simply went in different directions.
You know now beauty is a lot more than what you see in the mirror and picking yourself apart over things that can’t be changed (and don’t need to be) is ridiculous.
Lastly, 16-year-old me, remember to take joy in simple things. To love people and to accept their flaws. To give more and expect less and quit worrying, because life is never going to go the way you planned.
-Love an older and (some what) wiser you.
